2. Core Functions
- Combustion Chamber: Forms the cylindrical bore where the piston moves, creating the combustion chamber with the cylinder head and piston.
- Wear Resistance: Provides a durable, smooth surface for piston rings to slide against, protecting the more expensive engine block.
- Heat Transfer: Transfers intense combustion heat to the engine coolant for temperature regulation.
- Sealing: Prevents compression leakage (gases) and coolant/oil cross-contamination via precision fit and O-rings.
- Repairability: As a replaceable part, it allows engine overhaul without replacing the entire cylinder block.
3. Installation Location
- Position: Press-fitted into the cylinder bore holes of the engine block (cylinder block).
- Orientation: Installed vertically. The top flange seats against the block, secured by the cylinder head. The lower section is sealed with O-rings to isolate the coolant jacket.
- Environment: The outer surface is surrounded by engine coolant (wet design). The inner bore is where the piston and rings reciprocate.
- Quantity: Six (6) liners are used per engine (one for each cylinder in the 6-cylinder 6CT 8.3).
